Modernism; A New Decade. Paul Weller and Fred Perry.

In 1977, a brand new look based upon the Fred Perry shirt sprung up in Manchester. Boys started wearing Fred Perry shirts with designer jeans, trainers & wedge haircuts. They called themselves the Perry Boys. Ex Stone Rose's member & current Primal Scream Bassist Mani was one such member.

Northern Soul had remained a secretive youth cult within the ranks of the Perry Boys and by default was their music of choice. Unfortunately there were those who could not resist exploiting the movement; an episode of Top Of The Pops showing Northern Soul dancers was enough for the original Perry Boy's members to walk away from the scene in total disgust.

Much of the music being made by that decade's practitioner's had little or no appeal for the young who found it unexciting & irrelevant. It was time for a shake-up & that shake-up was called Punk.

One major act to spring out of Punk was The Jam and from within that bands ranks would emerge one of today's most iconic Mod's; Paul Weller.  Weller was often photographed wearing a Fred Perry, which he wore with either jeans or Prince of Wales check trousers. His audience adopted the band's style and sound and, needless to say, Fred Perry sales during this period became very healthy indeed.

The Jam's huge popularity set the scene for a 1979 Mod revival. Along with the release of the epic Mod rock opera that was Quadrophenia, wherein 'Jimmy', actor Phil Daniels, sported a white Fred Perry number, sales of the shirt rocketed.

Today The Modfather's love affair with Fred Perry clothing continues unabated. In 2009 Paul was proud to announce a new range of collarless classic pique shirts with Fred Perry. He has worked closely with Fred Perry on each element of the garment from the colours, fabric, rounded side venting, trim details, buttons and placket construction. The result is a classic garment with the legendary Weller attention to detail. Individually numbered and replete with Paul Weller signature these shirts show Paul's direction for the future with a nod to the past.

Fred Perry clothing; wear your's with pride. these
