1963: Northern Soul Nights kicked off in Northern Industrial Britain. Centred around the legendary clubs; The Twisted Wheel, The Torch and the Wigan Casino. Largely ignored by the Southern based media, but passed on word of mouth, the revellers of Northern Soul had no interest in becoming famous. However, the scene began to grow and soon thousands of kids were travelling hundreds of miles to attend the legendary ‘all nighters’. The shirt of choice was the emblematic Fred Perry Black/Yellow/yellow
The packed out clubs saw hoards of people dance until dawn, and clothing had to be chosen carefully. The Fred Perry shirt was perfect - created in knitted cotton pique, it was slim cut and breathable and managed to stay fresh for the journey home the next morning. Shirts and jackets were customised with unique badges, often pledging alligiance to their club of choice. Northen Soul managed to remain a secretive movement for many years, shying away from the media attention which slowly became seduced by its alusive scene. Finally, in 1975, Northern Soul dancing was shown on the BBC's Top of the Pops. For many of the original members, this signalled the end.
